About

Tong Pan (潘桐) is a Chinese-American interdisciplinary artist. Migrated from Guangzhou, China to the Bay Area of California in the fall of 2011. He completed his BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the summer of 2021.

Though initially only a painter, Tong has been working closely with his peers, collaborating and exploring a variety of fields such as stained glass, sound, and installation.

In 2019, Tong served as the keyboardist for Kuleshov. Fusing elements and skills gained from Tong’s close listening practice and study of synthesizers, he used this opportunity to not only broaden the soundscape of the band’s repertoire but also helped form the High-Speed Death Cult. The band had recorded their first studio album in the latter half of 2021 with Asian Improv. aRts Midwest. Tong released Studio Practice -- his solo musical project in February of 2023. As of 2024, Tong is presently active in his experimental outfit Tunnel spreading the gospel of musical primalism.

Tong's multi-faceted skill sets and backgrounds enable him to explore these mediums not only materialistically but also bring in a cultural/ philosophical subtext from the different perspectives gained from being a first-generation immigrant and a working artist.

Artist Statement

It could be a selfish manifestation of Tong’s worldview or philosophical belief, he felt the need to articulate them visually and sonically. A sensory exploration in the name of absurdism, perhaps, it’s for the cheap thrills and the painterly announcement of the existence of the peculiarity of ordinary objects and the surrealism within the mundane.
